Tribal Tattoos
Decorative and spiritual uses
Tattoos have served as rites of passage, marks of status and rank, symbols of religious and spiritual devotion, decorations for bravery, sexual lures and marks of fertility, pledges of love, punishment, amulets and talismans, protection, and as the marks of outcasts, slaves and convicts. The symbolism and impact of tattoos varies in different places and cultures, sometimes with unintended consequences. Also, tattoos show how a person feels about another person, or how they feel about a relative, preferably mother/father or daughter/son.

Natural Fashion: Tribal Decoration from AfricaReviewsI am an artist and this book has been such an inspiration to me. These people are absolutely beautiful, the photography is beautiful and it is all presented with elegance and simplicity. This books takes my breath away and I am mesmerized everyday when I open it's pages. Beautiful imagery. It will have you near tears... One of my most precious finds in recent months...the faces, the creativity, raw natural talent. Unbelievable. A wonderful book to draw inspiration from. My interest in this subject (the people of the Omo valley in Ethiopia) started with a YouTube (called The People of Omo) that I had sent to me. I googled the photographer (Hans Silvester) and found 2 books that were available here, and VERY reasonably priced. I jumped to purchase them- LOVE his work- wonderful photo artist/journalist. The poignant beauty of this primitive (but VERY detailed and artistic)body painting is a way of life, and the variety of plants and flowers these people incorporate into their elaborate body art is exquisite. I'd recommend any of Hans Silvester's photography books; apparently, he has many more. Wonderful eye for form, light and texture. I learned of this book from the woman who does my hair, British, named Helen. She had brought it to the salon. I looked through it, finding the images compelling & beautiful, strange & hypnotic. I bought it, & look through it when in need of an affirmation that the world, indeed , is still full of wonder amidst the turmoil. Respectfully submitte, Maggy C. Bartek Hans Silvester's NATURAL FASHION: TRIBAL DECORATION FROM AFRICA is a powerful presentation of East African tribal decoration routines. The Omo tribes use nature as accessories, whether it be leaves, flowers or butterfly wings: their fashion choices and way of life is documented with full-page color photos and accompanying historical insights. The scene of tribal conflicts and guerrilla incursions, Ethiopiaâs Omo Valley is also home to fascinating rites and traditions that have survived for thousands of years. The nomadic people who inhabit the valley share a gift for body painting and elaborate adornments borrowed from nature, and Hans Silvester has captured the results in a series of photographs made over the course of numerous trips. |

Today, people choose to be tattooed for cosmetic, sentimental/memorial, religious, and magical reasons, and to symbolize their belonging to or identification with particular groups, including criminal gangs (see criminal tattoos) but also a particular ethnic group or law-abiding subculture. Some Māori still choose to wear intricate moko on their faces. In Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand, the yantra tattoo is used for protection against evil and to increase luck.
